New Display In Lakeside

Pablo Casillas built a new display in San Marcos recently. The 3 products used were Blue Stone tumbled pavers and the old rustic quartz flagstone and Sienna sunset Rox pro flag mats. The pictures aren’t as good as the real thing. Go take a look! Great Job Pablo.

Lakeside used this space for a great display. This path to bridge look compliments the dry streambed perfectly! Lakeside is looking Good!

The Lakeside Crew Dose It Again

The Lakeside crew pulled off another great DIY "Build A Stone Bench Day"

The crowd was responsive and attentive to the new workshop.

The benches where sent down from San Marcos put together by PABLO (Thank you sir) San Marcos broke them down after Dave Garcia's blessing and sent them to Lakeside to be re-assembled in the yard. Dave Garcia picked out a great spot to display the benches and the Lakeside crew made it happen.

We started the DIY about 9am on Sat. February 28th and showed 6 different benches with prices to show how different stones would change the price. We went over the set up with the crowd then talked about Glaze n’ Seal sealers and went on a tour of the yard talking about all the different flag stones then to the boulder pit and talked about the different boulders. The crowd had many questions. Thanks to both teams San Marcos and Lakeside

San Marcos, CA - As historic dry conditions affecting the region’s water supply
sources and uncertainty regarding the volume of deliveries from the San Joaquin-
Sacramento Delta loom, Vallecitos Water District is asking all customers to
conserve 20 gallons a day to ensure water for 2008 and beyond. The combination of an eight year drought on the Colorado River, limited rain and snow in the Northern California Sierras, as well as court proceedings challenging state and federal environmental permits that allow water to be pumped to Southern California, VWD wholesalers are finding it necessary to withdraw water from storage to accommodate 2007 demand. But there is good news. Everyone can help, and it can be as little as saving 20 gallons per day. Quickly meet that conservation goal by: Irrigating landscapes before 6 a.m. and after 8 p.m. to reduce evaporation and interference from wind. Estimated savings – 20 to 25 gallons per day per valve Avoid over-watering landscaping by cutting irrigation to only 2 or 3 days per week, using the landscape calculator at www.vwd.org, or only after the top inch of soil is dry. Estimated savings – 25 to 50 gallons per valve for each minute or irrigation eliminated Using a broom or blower instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks. Estimated savings – 150 gallons or more per use Adjusting sprinklers to prevent overspray and run-off. Estimated savings – 15-20 gallons per day per valve
Repairing leaks and broken sprinkler heads. Estimated savings – 20 gallons per day per leak Adding 2-inches to 3-inches of mulch around trees to reduce evaporation.
Estimated savings – 40 gallons per day per valve/hydrozone Calling 1-800-986-4538 to participate in water conservation through programs such as the Commercial, Industrial, and Institutional Voucher Program, featuring low-water-use toilets, urinals, connectionless food steamers, pre-rinse spray valves, water brooms and high-efficiency clothes washers. Estimated savings – determined by fixture used
Due in part to the major storage in place at facilities owned by VWD wholesalers
the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and San Diego County
Water Authority – as well as customer usage patterns - there should be no need
for mandatory cutbacks in 2007. The same cannot be said for 2008 and beyond.
Therefore, conserving today could lessen impacts tomorrow. Moving forward,
conservation will be an integral part to the water-supply equation and this is the

Put on a free workshop “How to Build an East West fire pit kit” The seminar was a 2-hour class for the public at the San Marcos location The Reps that put on the show were Don from Karme Landscape; the mason Dean the rep from East West Phil the rep from Orco mortar products

The show was a great success. Don from Karme was very detailed from start to finish on all parts of the creation of the fire pit. Explaining everything from the footing needed to the mortar texture, tools to get the job done even how to insert the gas lines. As well as fire glass, sand or lava rock that is needed to fill the finished fire pit. The customers were extremely happy, getting all their questions answered.

What boulders do for the design

Boulders are strong elements in a landscape and can add great interest and character when properly positioned in your design. They add color, texture, mass and a sense of stability to an environment, whether natural our man-made.

Boulders and smaller stone offer beauty, and utility if they serve a purpose in the design, much like we find boulders serving a purpose in a natural environment. That purpose typically is to define an area, retain soil or create obstructions to control the flow of water.

Tips for placing boulders

As a general rule, boulders should appear ‘grounded’ to the earth, as opposed to looking like they fell off a truck. With some very round boulders this may require burying up to one-half of the boulder, while boulders with flat bottoms may look fine with only an inch or two buried below the surface.

Typically a boulder has a side or ‘face’ that looks better from the primary viewing location. Selection of the face may be pure aesthetics, like color or character, or it may be defined by the shape that makes it work better for its purpose in the landscape. Most boulder placement professionals can identify the better face of a boulder with a quick glance and this is something the novice can become good at in short order. The first step in selecting the face is to determine the bottom of the boulder. The bottom is usually the more massive part of the boulder.. Once the bottom, and thus the top are known, simply select the side of the boulder that most appeals to you. When the boulder is moved into position, you may want to do some fine tuning to get the best presentation.

While a single boulder can be used, most boulder installations involve several pieces and usually in grouping of 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 or more. Beyond two pieces, odd numbers are preferred.

Boulders placed in groups should also have varying heights. If three pieces, the larger one in typically placed between the other two. When viewed from above, it looks more natural if the boulders are not in a straight like. The bird’s eye view of the boulders, and the view from the primary viewing location, could be thought of as being a triangular placement, and better if a scalene triangle (no equal sides and no equal angles).
